Definition provided by John F. Barnes: “Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.” Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique. The therapist applies pressure with hands on to and into the patient’s body. The therapist addresses the tissue barrier of resistance by feeling for tightness, restrictions and adhesions in any plane that may be causing pain or dysfunction.
Myofascial Release is used to treat various types of chronic pain. Many patients seek myofascial treatment after losing flexibility or function following an injury or experiencing ongoing back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain or any part of the body that is surrounded by soft tissue, including headaches, TMJ and fibromyalgia.
Benefits of Myofascial Release:
• Corrects muscle imbalances
• Improves Range of Motion
• Relieves muscle soreness and joint stress
• Relaxes muscles
• Improves neuromuscular efficiency
